Sadako, after the farewell party with her classmates, in the schoolyard of Nobori-chō Elementary School, March 1955

On the walk home, Shigeo began to prepare Sadako for the experience, assuring her that the doctor would help her feel better. These comforting words made Sadako happy. She looked forward to getting treatment and recovering from her sickness.

Because Sadako did not want to miss any lessons, she asked if they could stop by the school to pick up her books. The class was on the field when she arrived, practicing for the next relay race. When they saw Sadako walk onto campus, they all rushed over to greet her, including Mr. Nomura. “Sadako is sick,” Shigeo explained, “and she’s going to be in the hospital for a little while.”

“Get well soon!” her classmates said. Sadako fought back her tears and struggled to put on a happy face.

“Sadako, come back soon!” they shouted and waved as Sadako walked out the gate.
